Iraq's Jews from 1951 until 2003
My current research focuses on the Jews living in Iraq since 1951 and especially under the period of Ba'th party rule from 1968 to 2003. The experience of Iraq's Jews offer important insights into the evolution of Iraqi political culture during this period, especially in regards to transformations in the relations between the country's ethno-religious groups. Ninety-five percent of Iraq’s 130,000 Jews fled persecution to Israel between 1950 and 1951, leaving scholarship on the subject to focus on explaining this upheaval. My research, on the other hand, focuses on the five percent who remained and the ways that the Arab-Israeli conflict affected domestic Iraqi politics and culture and relationships between Iraqi Jews and their Muslim and Christian neighbors.Through this topic, I explore larger questions regarding how the meaning of religious, ethnic, and other group identities change in response to political and cultural crises and the ways that these changes effect relations between groups within a society.
